ASA 3D Printing: The Outdoor & UV-Stable Material
If a part is going to sit outside in Indian sunlight for years, ASA is the material. It was developed specifically to solve the problem that ruins ABS outdoors, and it is what we specify for exterior fittings, signage, drone and RC components and anything permanently exposed to weather.
What UV actually does to a printed part
Ultraviolet light breaks polymer chains. In ABS the visible symptoms are yellowing, a chalky surface and a steady loss of impact strength, so a part that was tough when installed becomes brittle enough to crack from a knock a year later. PLA degrades faster still.
ASA is formulated to resist that photodegradation. It holds its colour, surface finish and mechanical properties through prolonged sun exposure, which in a climate with this much UV is not a marginal advantage.
Mechanically an ABS equivalent
ASA gives you essentially ABS-grade toughness, stiffness and heat resistance, so you are not trading away mechanical performance for the weather resistance. Parts take impact well and hold shape at temperatures that would soften PLA+ or PETG.
It also shares ABS's finishing behaviour, sanding and painting cleanly, which matters for exterior parts that need to match an existing colour or finish.
Where we use it
Drone and RC airframe components that live in the sun, exterior mounts and brackets, outdoor signage and nameplates, garden and balcony fittings, and automotive exterior trim pieces. Broadly, anything where replacing a degraded part in a year would be a nuisance.
Like ABS, ASA needs a heated enclosed chamber to print without warping, so it carries a similar price premium over PLA+ and PETG. For a part that is meant to last outdoors, it is the cheaper decision over any reasonable timeframe.

How long will an ASA part last outdoors?+
ASA is engineered for prolonged UV exposure and holds colour and strength far longer than ABS or PETG. Real lifespan depends on the part, the load and how harsh the exposure is, so tell us the application and we will give you a realistic view.
ASA or PETG for an outdoor part?+
PETG handles moisture well but is not UV-stabilised, so it degrades under sustained sun. For permanent outdoor installation ASA is the right choice. PETG is fine for shaded or short-term outdoor use.
Is ASA harder to print than ABS?+
Comparable. Both need a heated enclosed chamber and controlled cooling to avoid warping, which is standard on our machines.
Can ASA be painted?+
Yes, it sands and takes paint well, similar to ABS, which is useful for matching exterior parts to an existing finish.
