ABS 3D Printing: Heat Resistance & Impact Strength
ABS is the material of injection-moulded consumer hardware, from automotive interior trim to power tool housings, and it brings that same toughness and heat tolerance to FDM. It also demands a properly enclosed printer, which is exactly why it is worth knowing who is printing it for you.
Heat and impact, the two reasons to choose it
ABS keeps its shape at temperatures that would visibly deform PLA+ and start to soften PETG, which puts it in play for parts near motors, electronics, lighting or engine bays, and for anything that lives in a hot enclosed space.
It is also genuinely impact-tough rather than merely stiff. It takes repeated knocks and vibration without the sudden brittle failure of PLA, which is why enclosures, housings and functional prototypes for mechanical assemblies still get specified in ABS.
Finishing options no other common filament offers
ABS can be vapour smoothed, giving a glossy, injection-moulded surface that hides layer lines completely. It also solvent-bonds, meaning two ABS pieces can be chemically welded into what behaves as a single part, which is useful for assemblies larger than the build plate.
It sands and paints more readily than PETG too, so for a display prototype that needs a production-quality finish, ABS is often the practical route.
Why ABS needs an enclosure, and what happens without one
ABS shrinks as it cools. Print it in open air and the lower layers contract while the upper ones are still hot, so corners lift off the plate and long parts split along layer lines partway up. This is the single most common ABS failure, and it is a printer problem rather than a filament problem.
We print ABS in heated, enclosed chambers where the ambient temperature stays controlled through the whole job, which is what keeps large flat parts flat. If you have had ABS parts warp or delaminate from another supplier, this is almost always why.

Why did my ABS parts warp when printed elsewhere?+
Almost always an unenclosed printer. ABS contracts as it cools, so without a stable heated chamber the corners lift and tall parts crack along layer lines. We print ABS in enclosed chambers for exactly this reason.
ABS or ASA for an outdoor part?+
ASA, without hesitation. ABS yellows and grows brittle under prolonged UV. ASA has almost identical mechanical behaviour with proper UV stability built in.
Can you smooth ABS parts to a glossy finish?+
Yes. ABS responds to vapour smoothing, which melts the surface slightly and removes layer lines for an injection-moulded look. Mention it when you enquire, as it is a post-processing step.
Is ABS flame retardant?+
